Izan Petterle

Izan Petterle was born in 1956 and began to photograph in 1975. He married in 1978 and went to live on a ranch located on the border between Argentina and Uruguay. During this period he travelled 17.000 miles across the lenght and breadth of Brazil, going into the most interior areas to document the richness and variety of its natural ecosystems.

In 1981 he moved to the Mato Grosso State, to live in a horse breeding farm located on the Highlands of Chapada dos Guimaraes. In 1997 he decided to give up rural ranch life to dedicated himself full-time to photography. He's now a highly-esteemed professional photographer with numerous commissioned projects to his name. Together with his family, he divides his time between Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo where he has an studio and his own gallery.

Izan Petterle is interested above all in exploring and documenting those still-unknown aspects of Brazil and Latin America culture and tracing the remote aspects of its heritage: Iberian, native Indian and African. For many years one of the most sough-after photographers for the Brazilian edition of National Geographic, he derives his inspiration from the great masters of 20th century photography and Sebastiao Salgado.
